Berenice C. Bonsmann

Obituary

Beloved wife and mother “Bunnie” Bonsmann, aged 55, passed away after a year-and-a-half battle with melanoma on April 14, 2021. Bunnie was born Berenice Carol Chaplin on March 11, 1966 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Carol Chaplin. She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Mark, her daughter Caitlin (Chris) Backer and son Zachary (Amelia) Bonsmann, and twin grandsons, Christopher and Jude. She was the cherished sister of Cathy Edwards, David Chaplin, Colette Whitworth, Eddie Chaplin, and Diane Michelli, as well as their spouses. She is also survived by her husband’s mother, Maxine Walters, and siblings, Beth Gasparovic, David and Michael Bonsmann, as well as their spouses. Bunnie was the devoted aunt to many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Bunnie was always a bit self-conscious of her hands. She was born with pinky fingers which curved in slightly; she even checked her children after their birth to see if they shared the trait. However, those who loved Bunnie will primarily remember the incredible beauty she created with those hands. She was an avid gardener, who spent countless days in her yard tending to the flowers and plants she grew around her home with such care. Each year, her garden burst with gorgeous hues- attracting bees, hummingbirds, and the appreciative eye of all who beheld it. Though her garden gave her happiness, her hands sowed the seeds of joy for those she loved dearly. Bunnie lovingly crocheted baby blankets for her great nieces and nephews, until she was able to do so for her grandsons. She adored babies, and the hours she spent on just one blanket only made it that much warmer. Bunnie was a gifted painter, and with each brush stroke she created beautiful portraits for friends and family. Given her affinity for nature, it was no surprise that her hands primarily painted birds and flowers. For those who received a painting from Bunnie, it was evident she gave thoughtful attention to every detail. Though she is gone, Bunnie’s hands created a legacy that will be cherished for years, along with the memory of her genuine and beautiful soul. A viewing will be held from 6-8pm on Friday, April 16, 2021, at Hahn Funeral Home, 123 North Avenue, Millvale, Pittsburgh, PA 15209.
