On Sunday, September 27, 2026, age 84, of Pittsburgh. Father Peter Murphy was ordained to the Priesthood at St. Paul Cathedral by Bishop (Later cardinal) John J. Wright on May 18, 1968. Born in Pittsburgh as Peter Paul Murphy on September 19, 1942, to Irish-born parents, Peter and Theresa (Conroy) Murphy. He was raised in Holy Rosary Parish, Homewood, Pittsburgh, and attended Holy Rosary School and Central Catholic High School. Entering the seminary to study for the priesthood after high school, Peter was assigned by the Diocese of Pittsburgh to St. Mark's, a newly built seminary in Erie, from which he attended Gannon College for two years; then the "major seminary" years were spent at St. Vincent College in Latrobe for the final two years of college and four years of Theology. 

Four months after Father Murphy's ordination, he had the joy of joining his brother Bernie and his wife Karen in the Sacrament of Marriage on September 7, 1968. Bernie and Karen currently live in Plum Boro, having raised four children and 8 grandchildren. 

Father Murphy's parish priest assignments began with being parochial vicar at St. Francis de Sales in McKees Rocks, St. Pius in McKeesport, and St. Joseph in Verona-Penn Hills. Assigned to his first pastorate on his feast day, Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29, 1983, Father Murphy arrived at St. Eugene Parish in Liberty Boro; then in 1989, he was assigned to Resurrection Parish in West Mifflin. In 1994, Father Murphy was asked by Bishop Donald Wuerl, to be pastor of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Clairton. On March 23, 1998, Father Murphy was assigned pastor of St. Alphonsus Church, Wexford. Father often speaks about his joy of inheriting such an historic and rich tradition of faith at St. Alphonsus, supported by a strong Catholic education, and a commitment to build our parish for the future of our families and children. His final assignment came in 2015 at Assumption Church in Bellevue. Father Murphy was proud of his Irish heritage and liked to think of himself as an ambassador to Ireland on behalf of the fruits of the Catholic faith that have come to Pittsburgh from Ireland.

Friends and family are invited to attend visitation on Thursday from 1-5:30 PM and Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 AM at St. Aidan Parish, St. Alphonsus Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Aidan Parish Angel Fund or the Knights of Columbus.
