Obituary

Linda Szymanski, a lifelong Pittsburgher, accomplished legal researcher and devoted sister and aunt, passed away on Dec. 1, 2023.  She was 74.

A long-time resident of Shadyside, Linda had lived for her final few months in a skilled nursing facility due to on-going medical conditions.

She is survived by: brother and sister-in-law Thomas and LinnieSimmons, of Valencia, CA; sister and brother-in-law Maryellen and Mark Bagley, of Jacksonville, FL, and Vienna, VA; nephews Matthew Simmons of Santa Clarita, CA, Daniel Bagley, of Vienna, VA, and Brendan Bagley of Brooklyn, NY; nieces Meredith Simmons, of New York, and Marita Bagley of Temple Hills, MD; and five grandnephews and grandnieces.

An attorney, Linda had a 30-year career handling legal research at the National Center for Juvenile Justice where she was respected by colleagues for the careful and meticulous nature of her work product.

Linda was a loving and generous aunt, and enjoyed accompanying her nephews and nieces on visits to museums, monuments in Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, and other attractions. She maintained many close friendships – some going back as far as high school or earlier.

In retirement, she was a voracious reader, and enjoyed visits with family and trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Devoting all of her free time to academics in her earlier years, Linda had not been much of a sports fan.  That changed dramatically when her employer relocated to offices adjacent to the South Water Street headquarters of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Routinely passing coaches and players in the hallways and the cafeteria, Linda got to know a few by name and quickly became one of the team's most ardent fans.

Linda Ann Szymanski was born in 1949, the oldest child of the late Henry and Ann Szymanski of Shaler Township.  She graduated from Mount Alvernia High School and Seton Hill University, and subsequently earned a master's degree in Library Science and her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Respecting Linda's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held.  Messages of remembrance may be posted here to the Hahn Funeral Home website.  Interment will be in the family plot at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
