Fr. Daniel William Whalen

After 17 years of loving service to God and the people of God, surrounded by love and prayers Fr. Dan went home to his Father on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, The Feast of All Saints, age 63, of Baldwin Twp, Son of Mary Anna "Engel" and the late Donald William Whalen. Brother of Reverend Timothy F. Whalen, Mark (Terri) Whalen, Donna (David) Zador, and Joseph (Stephanie) Whalen. Uncle of Timothy, Gregory and Daniel Zador, M.J. (Jordan) Beckham, Michael, Donald, Luke, and Cole Whalen. Great Uncle of Ella Beckham. Also survived by many cousins. Friends received Friday 6-8 PM, Saturday 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Hahn Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. 123 North Avenue,(Next to Holy Spirit Parish) Millvale. 412-821-3700. Visitation Sunday starting with Vesper Service, Sunday 6 PM.- 8 PM at Holy Spirit Church. Mass of Christian Burial Monday 10 AM, Holy Spirit Church. Fr. Dan attended Resurrection Grade School, Brookline and graduated from South Hills Catholic High School in 1972. Fr. Dan was a graduate of Villanova University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and was the Captain of the rugby team, Duquesne University, receiving his Doctor of Law, Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he received his Bachelor of Sacred Theology, and Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where he earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology. He was ordained as a deacon in St. Peter's Basilica on October 7, 1999. He was ordained a Priest at St. Paul's Cathedral on June 24, 2000 , celebrating his first Mass on his forty sixth birthday. Fr. Dan was the Parochial Vicar at St. Phillip Parish from July 3, 2000-September 8, 2000, Assistant Director Office for Worship from July 13, 2001- July 8, 2002, Master of Ceremonies to Diocesan Bishop from July 13, 2001- July 8, 2002, Administrator at Saint Blaise Parish from July 8, 2002 - September 20, 2002, Parochial Vicar at Saint John Vianney Parish from September 20, 2002- March 7, 2005, Administrator at Guardian Angels Parish from March 7, 2005- April 16, 2007, Administrator at Holy Spirit Parish from April 16, 2007-October 8, 2007, Pastor at Holy Spirit Parish from October 8, 2007-July 11, 2016, Administrator of St. Nicholas Parish from July 14, 2008- July 14, 2014, Pastor of St. Nicholas Parish from July 14, 2014- July 11, 2016, and Chaplain of Education Part-Time at North Catholic High School from September 18, 2008- July 11, 2011. He was the former Secretary to Cardinal Wuerl, First President of the Ben's Men of St. Benedict of the Abbot Church, and a real estate agent for Howard Hanna. His golf game was better than the jokes he used during his homilies. His deep love for families and their growth in spirituality was proven by his dedication to The Families of Mary and The National Catholic Engagement Encounter.
